How to Test Your Signup and Onboarding Flow

Your team can get through it because they built it. A new user can't lean on that.

·4 min read

Onboarding is where a new user decides whether your product is worth the effort. It's also the flow the team knows best, which makes it the hardest to see clearly. Everyone on the team can get through it. That proves very little.

Here is what to check, step by step, as someone who has never seen it.

The signup checklist

  • Password rules: are they shown before you type, or only after an error?
  • Email codes: can you paste the code? Does it expire before the email arrives?
  • Required fields: is every question needed right now, or could it wait?
  • Skipping: can you skip the steps that don't matter yet — the team invite, the tour?
  • Errors: does each error say what's wrong and keep what you typed?
  • The first screen: after signup, is it clear what to do first?

Ask for less, sooner

The most common onboarding problem isn't a bug. It's asking for too much before giving anything back — company size, role and team invites before the person has seen what the product does.

How a Run does it

Paste the signup link, pick desktop or mobile, and tell the panel what to do — "sign up for the free plan and skip anything optional". It fills every field with test details and goes through every step it can reach.

If part of the flow is behind a login, connect the site first and the panel runs it signed in. You get a Run Sheet with each confusing step pinned to the screen where it happened and the change to make.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can Prior.Run create a real account?
It fills signup forms with test details. If an email code is needed and can't be reached, that step is marked as blocked, never skipped quietly.
Can it test the product after signup?
Yes — connect the site so the panel runs it signed in, then point it at the screens you care about.
How long does it take?
Under an hour — usually about 45 to 55 minutes.
How much does it cost?
Your first Run is free, with no card. After that, plans are on the pricing page.
